FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Wood naturally expands and contracts with changes in humidity, which can lead to warping, cracking, splitting, and failed glue joints. These issues often show up as buckling panels, jammed drawers, crooked parts, or visible shrinkage lines in finished wood. Nelsonite helps stabilize the wood by reducing moisture movement within the fibers—minimizing these costly defects during manufacturing and in the field. Applying Nelsonite improves durability, finish quality, and long-term performance.

  • Nelsonite is best applied after all gluing operations are completed. Applying it beforehand may reduce the glue bond strength. When used post-gluing, Nelsonite enhances the water resistance of the bond.

  • Absolutely. Once Nelsonite has fully dried (typically within 24 hours), you can apply both water-based and oil-based finishes. It also promotes more uniform stain absorption, especially on end grains.

  • On average, one gallon of Nelsonite covers approximately 200 square feet. However, actual coverage may vary depending on the wood's porosity and grain.

  • Unopened containers of Nelsonite have a shelf life exceeding 25 years. Once opened, the shelf life reduces to about 9 months due to solvent evaporation. To maximize longevity, keep containers sealed tightly and minimize air exposure.
